Go Beyond the Classroom

SMCC offers many opportunities for you to enrich your educational experience.

The Beacon

The Beacon is a student-run newspaper serving the entire SMCC community. The paper is distributed free-of-charge at various locations on campus, including the Campus Center, several classroom buildings, the enrollment services office, the dining hall and the library. Published bi-weekly, The Beacon is read by students, faculty, staff, alumni, prospective students and campus visitors. To view The Beacon online, visit The Beacon website.

Global Studies

The Global Studies Center at SMCC seeks to internationalize the college through the development of new curriculum, the support of international students and events, and education abroad programming. We collaborate with a variety of entities on campus to prepare students for a globalized future. To learn more, visit our Global Studies webpage.

Honors Program

The Honors Program serves students at Southern Maine Community College by providing opportunities to engage in enriched learning experiences. The program is open to every student. Students may participate by taking honors courses or honors options. To learn more, visit our Honors Program webpage.

Public Safety Live-in Program

Are you interested in gaining fire prevention, life safety and emergency operations experience while saving on housing, getting paid and building your community service experience? If so, SMCC’s Public Safety Live-in Program could be for you. To learn more, visit our Public Safety Live-in Program webpage.

We do a lot in a two-year period of time. Two years seems like a long time for students, but it's really not for study. For Study Abroad, we've developed the "Global Classroom." Global classroom, our semester-long online and in-person courses that have a travel component embedded into the class. Some of these, for example, have included an Education program in Iceland, Art History programs in Italy and Spain. And then we have some upcoming programs such as a Global Health program in Amsterdam. So it's a learning experience and really immersive and I think it really makes them really excited and passionate. International travel and international study really helps build those soft skills, which are something that employers and everybody can benefit from. I've chosen to do an honors project with my Nursing program and this is like research. And I was talking about this today with my advisor. I have an interest in community health, she's like, "Okay, we're gonna get you set up with like the Portland Co-Op, and we're gonna get you set up with like these different NGOs. And you can take extra classes through this organization." Because we have such a good reputation and a good relationship with industry, we listen to what industry wants from our students. We try to make them well-rounded. By the time they're walking out the door, all of us as faculty can feel really confident.
