Academic Support

We’re Here to Help You Succeed

Advising

Advising is one of the most important keys to success at SMCC. As a student at the College, both dedicated faculty and staff advisors are available to meet with you to ensure you stay on track and achieve your goals. We highly encourage all students to meet with an advisor every semester. Learn more.

The Learning Commons

The Learning Commons is located in the L.L.Bean Learning Commons on the Midcoast Campus and the second floor of the Campus Center on the South Portland Campus. It integrates the Library, Tutoring and the Writing Center in comfortable and active learning spaces. Here, you can find the resources and expertise you need to enhance your learning and reach your academic goals. Learn more.

Success Programs

SMCC’s Success Programs provide support, structure and incentives to guide students to being successful in college. Learn more.

Disability Services

SMCC is committed to providing accommodations and special services to our students with disabilities. If you have a disability, we can provide you with tools to help level the playing field and be successful.

SMCC is known for how supportive the staff and faculty are. We go out of our way to make the transition from high school to college seamless and easy. And you'll never go without a tutor or a faculty to help you with your homework. Students can come to the Advising Office for a number of things. [Inaudible] classes and schedules being kind of the forefront, but also say you need help getting organized, I can help you come up with something how to organize. Concerns about a class, help you approach a professor, how to craft an email if you're asking something that you haven't asked before. So the purpose of the Learning Commons is to support students across the board. We have writing tutors, math tutors, all levels, and science tutors. Ideally, they come the first week of school, they meet us and then we have a relationship. We also have some different programs. So one of them is "Path to Graduation." That is for incoming first-year students for some additional support and kind of navigating college. We also have TRIO and some other supports for students to make sure that you're taking advantage and getting the most out of your experience here. And then we have Disability Support Services for any student who has a diagnosis that rises to the level of a disability, in need of classroom accommodations, or other supports. Everything we talk about is confidential. No information about the student's personal experiences or disability leaves the office. So faculty are not privy to that information. Students can share whatever it is that they would like to know with their faculty member, but they're not required to. One of the benefits of coming to SMCC is you can explore. Some students come in undecided and try some different majors try and kind of survey their interests. And you can also get the core classes out of the way your English, your math. If you have a four-year degree in mind and want to be more cost-effective, you can look at that four-year degree and take the classes here and transfer on and build upon your Associate's and continue on there.
