Adiel: Construction Technology

The construction field involves constantly changing technology in today’s continuing search for more energy-efficient structures. Technically trained professionals with innovative ideas and the skills to apply these ideas and knowledge are needed to meet the challenges of today’s building industry. All students participate in framing and interior finishing projects in a lab setting that provides them with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the construction industry. Meet one of those well-rounded students, Adiel Nimbona.

"While growing up in Burundi, I loved to watch houses and highways being built. Now I’m earning a Construction Technology degree so I can build a future in the construction trade. I moved to the U.S. in 2015 for the opportunity and to escape the war and political strife in my homeland in central Africa.

Drawn by SMCC’s location, construction program and low tuition, I arrived here in 2017 and later entered the inaugural class of SMCC’s Construction Institute, a workforce training program designed to give people skills that are in demand in the construction industry.

After completing the institute, I decided to continue my education at SMCC in the Construction Technology program. I’m now working toward a degree in Construction Technology and a certificate in Heavy Equipment Operations.Construction is my passion, and I’m grateful I’ll have a bright future that probably wouldn’t have been possible in Burundi. Upon completion of my degree and certificate, I’ll have the skills to build houses and highways – something I’ve dreamed about since I was young. This program is helping me realize my dreams. I am really proud to say I attend SMCC. It gives me hope for the future and the promise to lead the life I want to have." - Adiel Nimbona, Construction Technology

Do I see my future in construction? Absolutely. We do hands-on learning, build sheds down in the shop -- part of the class process. It goes from designing a plan to digging down. And my favorite part is building, hands-on framing, and being on a job site.

And there's a huge support SMCC as well, from the staff, supervising instructors, peer tutors, and people can help you succeed actually. It's like amazing to see the work we always wanted to achieve in life achievable, and then it's like amazing to see what you dreamed becoming true.

SMCC. It's time!
