Student Activities

Get Involved.

SMCC strives to keep you engaged inside and outside the classroom to help you grow, build connections and develop lifelong friends and mentors. The Student Activities Office connects you with student organizations, campus activities, community service and leadership opportunities that help lead to success.

Clubs & Organizations

On average, SMCC offers over 30 clubs & organizations to our students every year. Clubs and organizations range from The Beacon student newspaper and Writ literary magazine to Phi Theta Kappa national honor society and the Veterans Club. If we don’t have what you’re looking for we’ll work with you to develop it. Our goal is to have a range of offerings so that all our students have a chance to get involved.

The Captain’s House – Home to Our Clubs & Organizations

The Captain’s House is a historic building on our South Portland Campus that originally served as officers’ quarters for Fort Preble and is now dedicated to student use. It houses the Student Senate, Phi Theta Kappa, The Beacon and the Veterans Club. It also has several areas where students can study or meet in small groups, and is home to the Captain’s Cupboard, a student-run food pantry.

Veterans Student Organization

The SMCC Veterans Club was established to provide support and a forum for those interested in veterans’ issues. Club events include film discussions, guest speakers, community service, field trips, social events and more. Membership is open to any student, staff member or faculty member with an interest in veterans’ issues. For more information, contact the club at veteransclub@smccME.edu.

Looking for information about Veterans benefits and resources? Visit our Veterans webpage.

Campus Activities

We offer campus activities throughout the year to bring the SMCC community together. These events are a great way to get out and enjoy the campus, meet new people and have some fun.

Popular events held every year include:

  • Welcome BBQ – September
  • Winter Carnival – February
  • Spring Fest – May

Student Government

The Student Senate, SMCC’s student government, plans campus activities and events, advocates for student rights, and oversees recognition and funding of other student organizations.

I did not know anybody and I wanted to know people. I was able to go paddleboarding with a group of people that I had never met before and yet was able to forge connections because the student activities. We have over 30 clubs and organizations here on campus. And it is really great because each club has that virtual and in-person option. So, students have more of that hybrid opportunity. If they have a busy class schedule, they're able to just hop online and tune into a regular club meeting or go be in-person with everyone. I'm a full-time student and I live off campus. But, even though I live off campus, I still have the opportunities to come and be a part of any of the student activities on campus or otherwise, which is really amazing. Some of our big events that we have throughout the year, we have Community Fest and our Welcome Barbecue, which is where we kind of kick-off we have events every single day multiple events every day just to get students to engage with each other. Spring Fest is basically the spring version of our Welcome Week. And it's another opportunity where we have a bunch of bigger events happening -- another opportunity for students to get involved in. I went to the Welcoming Barbecue here at the beginning of the semester. A plethora of different people from different organizations, promoting different activities that we have on campus, or resources that are available to students. Captain's Cupboard it is really cool. It is basically a student-run pantry and for students who may not have the accessibility or the transportation to get to our local grocery stores to our local shops. They have the option to get any of their basic necessities, groceries, toiletries, any day-to-day needs. If you have a hobby that you don't see that serves a club here right now, reach out to us, let us know. Because we can make that club happen within weeks.
